We can discuss what we can do after this week to get back in sync with the Thursday group (see below). I propose doing something special, outside the regular sequence of study, on Feb. 8. This will bring the two groups back into sync the following week on T-5.V.

Thursday group finished T.5.III also (having skipped group study of 5.II). However, THERE WILL BE NO THURSDAY MEETING THIS COMING WEEK because I am leaving town Thursday and returning on Monday. So this group will again be one week behind the Tuesday group.

The week after I return, to allow me some time to get back into the groove producing commentaries, we will watch the DVD that came out earlier this year, “A Course in Miracles: the Movie.” It includes interviews with more than a dozen Course leaders, including Ken Wapnick, Gary Renard, and Tom Carpenter. I have not watched this DVD myself as yet, so this will be a new experience for us all. The movie is just 61 minutes long, so we can share our impressions and opinions of it after watching it.

Also, there will be no classes the week of Thanksgiving, Nov 23 and 25.

Not too long ago, I attended your Thursday night “A Course In Miracles” group with my friends Bob Cory and Patricia Michaels.  During the intervals for refreshments, you played an audit CD of “A Course In Miracles” affirmations/meditations that I thought was called “Serenity” with the voice of Beverly Hutchinson, however, I have had no luck in sourcing the CD yet.  I wondered if I got the title or voice incorrect and wonder if you could share with me the title and voice details so I can make another attempt to locate a copy for purchase.

I replied as follows:

The title is almost correct: "Serenity through A Course in Miracles," and the reader is Leigh Taylor-Young, not Beverly Hutchinson. Beverly also made a series of recordings of readings from the Course.

S 1 A 4 Asking is holy, and it is holy because it is a way of reaching God. He is the Answerer because you are in need of an Answer. No- one can3 ask for another and receive the answer for him. But you can, and indeed you must, help him by offering your love and support that his answer be holy and his true need recognized. That is prayer; it is the same for yourself or for another. There is no difference. If you received the answers for another, there would be a difference.

S 1 A 5 This does not mean that you cannot get messages for another, if it is God Who chooses this way of reaching him. This will usually happen unexpectedly, generally in the form of a sudden feeling that you have something to tell him; a message to deliver. You have not been wrong in the past about how you have asked, but you are ready for a step ahead now. There are joint decisions in which unanimity of response is a good indication of authenticity. This should not be abandoned. But asking is a lesson in trust, and no-one can trust for another. He can only strengthen another’s trust by offering it to him and having faith in his ability to hear for himself.

S 1 A 6 Asking is the way to God because it offers us His Will as He would have us6 hear it. We will have a series of lessons on asking because you have not understood it. But do not think because of that that you have been mistaken in your attempts. You have done well and will do better.

S 1 A 7 Any specific question involves a large number of assumptions which inevitably limit the answer. A specific question is actually a decision about the kind of answer that is acceptable. The purpose of words is to limit, and by limiting to make a vast area of experience more manageable. But that means manageable by YOU. For many aspects of living in this world that is necessary. But not for asking. God does not use words and does not answer in words. He can only “speak” to the Christ in you, Who translates His Answer into whatever language you can understand and accept. Sometimes words will limit fear; sometimes not. That is why some people hear words, some11 receive feelings of inner conviction, and some do not become aware of anything. Yet God has answered, and His Answer will reach you when you are ready.

S 1 A 8 Answers are not up to you. Any limit you place on them interferes with hearing. God’s Voice is silent and speaks in silence. That means that you do not phrase the question and you do not restrict the answer.

S 1 A 9 Asking is prayer. It is not a demand. It is not questioning. It is not limitation. The only real request is for God’s Answer. It needs the humility of trust, not the arrogance of false certainty. Trust cannot lie in idols, for that is merely faith in magic. Trust requires faith that God understands, knows, and will answer. It means a state of peace. For this you can safely ask. We will be studying this section on June 15 and 17, which will be the final Text study meetings of the spring. We’ll be taking a break for the summer, resuming our studies with Chapter 4, Section I, in the first week after Labor Day, on September 7 and 9.

Our two study groups will continue to gather over the summer, however, mostly without my presence. I’ve suggested that they can listen to Robert Perry’s set of seven 90-minute tapes that cover the supplement to the Course, The Song of Prayer. This is a wonderful piece of channelled writing that contains some of the highest teaching of the Course material. The tape set is kept in the cabinet in the kitchen marked “Course in Miracles,” where the collection of tea for our breaks is kept.

Some of you have the Song of Prayer supplement as the final section in your blue Course books, if you have the Third Edition. (It will include the word “Supplements” on the cover if you do.) If not, you should be able to purchase a separate copy of the pamphlet in some places.

First, because I’ll be out of town April 25, 2010 to May 5, 2010. Second, I want to suggest that everyone study not only Chapter 3, Section I, but also Chapter 6, Section I, since both give the Course’s view of the crucifixion. Chapter 3 presents what the crucifixion was not (a sacrifice to atone for sins); Chapter 6 present what the crucifixion was (a demonstration of the message, ‘Teach only love, for that is what you are’.) Third, I chose to comment on this long section in two parts, thus requiring two files. And finally, fourth, I wanted to share not only my own comments but those of Robert Perry.

I felt led to include Robert’s commentaries because I have not yet updated my own commentaries on Chapter 6 to include the Urtext, which Robert’s do include. I will be updating my notes shortly after I get back from my trip, but I just don’t have time before leaving next Sunday.

You will notice that “my” commentary on the second part of 6.I was actually guest-written by Robert Perry! So you have two commentaries on the section by Robert, written many years apart and, as you will see, quite different. When I finally prepare these commentaries for publication, I will most likely write my own comments for these paragraphs. Anew Archival Website for A Course in Miracles was launched on 11th November 2009 by the partnership of the Course‘s publisher, the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP), and the Foundation for A Course in Miracles (FACIM).

This unique website offers original and authentic historical material about the Course and its Scribes, most of which has never been seen before. All of the material presented is made up of firsthand documented selections from both Foundations’ vast collections of preserved memorabilia from the early days of the Course. This includes: articles, archival photos from 1975- 1985, film clips, audio recordings, interviews and newspaper clippings, along with the complete, previously unpublished autobiographies of A Course in Miracles’ scribes Dr. Helen Schucman and Dr. William Thetford and other personal material about their lives. There will be continued expansion of the site as still more first-hand historical Course material is readied and added from the Foundations’ original archives.
FIP’s President, Judith Skutch Whitson, said: “Selections have also included material that will correct some of the errors in fact and perceptions about A Course in Miracles and its inception — including mistakes, myths and legends that have been circulated widely throughout the Internet.”

I won’t go into all the reasons, but I do ask your prayers that I can buckle down and start producing new commentaries.

I thought I'd share a few quotes I ran across today from Ramana Maharshi, an Indian sage who lived from 1879 to 1950. His primary teaching is associated with Non-dualism, Advaita Vedanta, and Jnana yoga. What is striking to me about these quotations is the marked similarity to "A Course in Miracles."

We loosely talk of Self-realization, for lack of a better term. But how can one real-ize or make real that which alone is real? All we need to do is to give up our habit of regarding as real that which is unreal. All religious practices are meant solely to help us do this. When we stop regarding the unreal as real, then reality alone will remain, and we will be that. (Ramana Maharshi)

If the mind is happy, not only the body but the whole world will be happy. So one must find out how to become happy oneself. Wanting to reform the world without discovering one's true self is like trying to cover the whole world with leather to avoid the pain of walking on stones and thorns. All religions have come into existence because people want something elaborate and attractive and puzzling. Each religion is complex, and each sect in each religion has its own adherents and antagonists. For example, an ordinary Christian will not be satisfied unless he is told that God is somewhere in the far-off heavens, not to be reached by us unaided. Christ alone knew Him and Christ alone can guide us. Worship Christ and be saved. If he is told the simple truth, that "the kingdom of heaven is within you," he is not satisfied and will read complex and far-fetched meanings into such statements. So, there will be no class either this morning, Tuesday (that's due to my cold), or this coming Thursday either (because we've been pre-empted).
